An Introduction to Your Water
Here's a small experiment: next time you're at a restaurant, order a glass of water and actually pay attention to it. Does it taste like anything? For a lot of people, especially anyone who's switched to filtered water at home, the answer is suddenly yes — usually chlorine.
That's not your imagination. Chlorine is added to most municipal water supplies specifically to kill bacteria during treatment and transport — it's doing its job. But its job isn't to taste good, and once your palate calibrates to water without it, you notice it everywhere else.
I told my mom this once, almost as a passing comment — that our sink water tasted like chlorine, and that I'd stopped drinking water at restaurants because of it. She didn't think much of it at the time. Then she got filtration and a Kangen system installed in her own home. Within weeks, she was telling me the same thing: she couldn't drink water anywhere else anymore either. The contrast had become impossible to ignore.
This isn't really about chlorine specifically — it's about what 'clean enough' actually means. Municipal water in the U.S. is legally required to meet minimum safety standards, and it generally does. But minimum safety and what you'd actually choose to drink, if you really knew what was in it, are two different bars.
Beyond chlorine, most tap water carries some combination of disinfection byproducts (trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids), trace heavy metals from aging infrastructure, and increasingly, PFAS — the so-called 'forever chemicals' now found in the blood of the vast majority of Americans, largely from water and food packaging.
None of this is meant to scare you. It's meant to do exactly what happened with my mom: once you know what to taste for, you can't un-taste it. And once you can't un-taste it, fixing it stops feeling optional.
