The Berkey Question
People ask me about Berkey more than almost any other filter. It's the one that shows up in every prepper forum, every homesteading Instagram, every "what filter should I buy" thread — the big steel canister on the counter has become shorthand for taking your water seriously. So when someone's deciding between a Berkey, a Brita, one of the RO pitchers, and what we sell, I don't think the honest answer is "ours is better." The honest answer is that these systems aren't doing the same job, and once you see the mechanics, the choice mostly makes itself.
What a Berkey actually is
A Berkey is gravity filtration. No electricity, no pump, no plumbing — water sits in the top chamber, gravity pulls it through a carbon-based element into the bottom chamber, and you drink from the spigot. That simplicity is the whole appeal. It travels, it works during a power outage, and the Black Berkey elements have historically done a solid job on chlorine taste, sediment, and some organics through activated carbon adsorption.
Two things are worth knowing if you're comparing it to what we carry. First, the elements aren't NSF certified — Berkey has generally relied on independent lab testing against NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 standards rather than certification itself, and their newer Phoenix elements do carry NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 certification. That's a real distinction, not a knock: certification and independent testing aren't the same thing, and it's fair to want to know which one you're getting. Second, the EPA issued a Stop Sale order against Black Berkey elements in late 2023 over unregistered use of silver as an antimicrobial agent, and that regulatory dispute is still working through the courts as of this year — alongside a separate consumer lawsuit alleging the contaminant-removal claims were overstated. Berkey disputes both. I'm not going to adjudicate a case that's still in the Fifth Circuit. I'll just say: if you're the kind of person who reads the fine print, this is worth knowing before you buy.
What the pitcher filters are actually for
Brita and ZeroWater solve a narrower problem, and they're honest about it in different ways. Brita uses activated carbon and ion exchange to knock down chlorine taste, some lead, some copper — a light pass, replaced roughly every 40 gallons. It was never built to compete with whole-system filtration; it's built to make tap water taste less like a public pool for about eight dollars a filter.
ZeroWater goes further with a five-stage ion-exchange design aimed at pulling dissolved solids down close to zero. It's genuinely effective at that specific job, and it's also the reason people describe ZeroWater as tasting "flat" — it's stripping out the same dissolved minerals that give water its flavor, with no step to put anything back. AquaTru sits in between: a countertop reverse osmosis unit, no plumbing required, IAPMO-certified against several NSF/ANSI standards for a genuinely broad list of contaminants including PFAS. The tradeoffs are real too — a slow fill, a tank you empty by hand, and a footprint the size of a stand mixer.
None of these are bad products. They're just each solving for one variable — taste, or TDS, or countertop convenience — rather than the water as a whole system.
Where the Triton X12 is a different kind of answer
The Triton X12 is continuous-flow reverse osmosis, which is a meaningfully different architecture from anything above. Instead of filling a tank and waiting, it filters water as it flows — a 0.0001-micron membrane across five stages, delivering water on demand rather than in batches, with a 3:1 water-to-waste ratio that's a real efficiency jump over older RO systems that used to waste three or four gallons for every one they produced.
The part that actually matters for the Berkey comparison: RO systems have always had one honest weakness, which is that they strip minerals along with the contaminants. That's why we don't sell RO on its own. The X12 addresses it directly with PCC mineralization built into the system, bringing the water back to a pH around 7.5 and restoring the minerals that give filtered water body instead of that flat, stripped taste ZeroWater users describe. You get RO-level contaminant reduction without trading away the water's structure to get it.
Where Kangen does something none of these attempt
This is the piece that confuses people, because it gets lumped in with "filters" when it's really solving a different problem. A Kangen machine doesn't replace your filtration step — it ionizes water after it's been filtered, separating it into acidic and alkaline streams across seven adjustable pH levels, each suited to a different use: strongly alkaline for cooking and cleaning, drinking-level alkaline for daily hydration, acidic water for skin and produce.
I'll say the thing plainly because I think clarity matters more than a sales pitch: alkaline water doesn't change your body's pH. Your blood pH is regulated by your kidneys and lungs within an extremely narrow range regardless of what you drink, and any claim otherwise isn't accurate. What ionization does change is the water itself — the taste, and the chemistry that makes alkaline water genuinely effective at cutting oil and grease through saponification, which is why people use the higher pH settings on produce and dishes. Kangen machines are FDA-registered medical devices in the U.S., and Japan recognizes water ionizers as home medical devices under its own regulatory framework — that's a meaningful signal about how seriously the technology is treated, and it's the honest version of the claim, not the exaggerated one.
How I'd actually think about it
If what you want is a portable, no-electricity backup that handles chlorine taste and travels well, a gravity filter still has a place — just go in with clear eyes about where Berkey's regulatory situation currently stands. If you want a pitcher for the fridge, Brita and ZeroWater are doing exactly what they say they do, at exactly the price point that implies.
But if the question is "what actually purifies my water and makes it good, day to day, at the tap" — that's a different tier of problem, and it's the one the Triton X12 and a Kangen machine are built to solve together: real contaminant reduction that doesn't strip the water down to nothing, and a finishing step that gives you control over the water's chemistry for whatever you're using it for that day. It's not that the countertop options are wrong. It's that they were never trying to do this job in the first place.
